We would be pleased to carry out your HSE Approved Diver's Medical Examination and hope to welcome you to our convenient Glasgow city centre medical practice. HSE
commercial diving medicals are usually available every day from Monday
to Friday, 9am-5pm, making it easier to arrange your appointment. The
medicals take about an hour and involve a full medical examination,
spirometry (lung function tests), a Chester Step exercise test (see
below) and possibly a hearing test, an ECG and a blood test (to check
haemoglobin).
Cost:
Annual HSE diving medicals cost £140.
What
to bring: Chester
Step Test: This
test gives your calculated aerobic capacity and involves stepping onto
and off a 30cm box in time to a beat. At 2 minute intervals your heart
rate is measured, you will be asked how you are finding the exercise and
then the stepping rate will be increased slightly. The test will stop
when you reach about 80% of your calculated maximum heart rate or before
if you feel unwell.The
aerobic capacity aimed for is about 45 litres O2/kg/min or more. You may
wish to bring shorts +/- training shoes for this. As
this test relies on pulse rate, it can be affected by anything that may
affect your pulse. Please avoid alcohol particularly in large quantities
if you can, for the day or so before the test .If you are travelling a
great distance before your medical, you may prefer to arrive the day
before in Glasgow to avoid being very tired.
